Louis Rosenthall – Class of 2025

Louis Rosenthall has possessed a desire to help other people since he was young. He comes from a family of nurses, and has seen how hard nurses work to make a positive difference. By the time Louis was a freshman in high school, he knew that he wanted to be a part of that legacy. Louis has experienced the strong community found within his major since entering the University of Maine. He explains that the program encourages unity among the students. And as a result, Louis and the other students have succeeded through their challenges, as they all support and encourage each other.

Louis received the 2021/2022 Gene S. Cranch Nursing School Scholarship, which he says took pressure off of having to “worry about the cost of school and the rigorous demands of the major.” He is grateful for the generosity of others, and hopes that one day he can pay it forward.

Andrew is not your typical student at the University of Maine, but he is a hardworking one. While working full-time as a father and husband, Andrew completed a four-year degree in Survey Engineering Technology entirely online.

Andrew was the 2021-2022 recipient of the Virginia and Roger Ferguson New England Section Scholarship. This was crucial for him in the midst of his career change, as it helped relieve the strain on his family while he was at the University.

With his degree, Andrew plans to become a Professional Land Surveyor. However, that is no easy task. Alongside the degree he received at UMaine, he must also pass two licensing tests and work for a Professional Land surveyor for at least four years. Andrew has already passed one licensing test and graduated with his bachelor’s. His scholarship was a huge help along the way, and he hopes that in the future, he can help other students the way he was.

When Guy Vegas received a scholarship from the William S. Cohen Institute for Leadership and Public Service, he knew exactly what he would use it for: the 2022 Washington Leadership Course. With this award’s help, he was able to go to the nation’s capital and learn about our government and how it will play a role in his future career. He also had the opportunity to speak with both Maine State Senators, Susan Collins and Angus King.

Guy studies Ecology and Environmental Science here at the University and hopes to impact the way people consider and interact with the world around them and make a change for the better. Guy believes that his time at the Leadership Course gave him valuable insight into what he must do in the future to meet his goals and enact the change he wants to see.
