This is a exciting time for the university even during the COVID pandemic. It is great to be able to virtually participate in this historic day. Hoping this building is a great place of learning for many students at the university. Class of 1975

What a great project for UMaine and the school of engineering. Many thanks for all of those who have worked so hard to make this a reality. The real story has yet to begin and will be told over the coming generations of engineers that will benefit from the use and knowledge sharing that this facility will support. Let's celebrate this major accomplishment and also recognize that to stay current, relevant and provide leadership for the future in the field of engineering that the modernization of the UMaine college of engineering will and must be an ongoing focus.

The University of Maine Engineering School has been a part of the Weston Family starting with George Weston and his cousin Benjamin Gould who were in the first graduating class of 1872. My grandfather Wallace A. Weston and his cousin Benjamin Weston graduated 1900 in Civil Engineering. My father Donald Weston graduated with a BSME degree in1941. Uncles Robert Weston and William Weston also graduated with engineering degrees. My Brother John Weston BSME 1974. I graduated BSME 1978. All of us enjoyed successful careers thanks to the excellent and complete education we received at good ole UMO!

Proud to be a UMaine engineering graduate! It's been wonderful to see how the College of Engineering has progressed over the past couple of decades. This building symbolizes the growth and excellence of the program, its dedicated professors, creative students, and meaningful research. I am grateful for my memorable experiences at UMaine and the quality of education and relationships I gained while there. Pete Dumont, 1994 Civil Engineering

February, 8, 2021 To whom it may concern, Greetings from 2021. It seems strange that you know who we are, through this letter, while we have no idea of who you are or what you do or what the world is like in your time. What we can do is tell you a little bit about ourselves and our time. We are high school students in Mr. Harper’s Drafting & Engineering Technology class at the Presque Isle Regional Career & Technical Center in Presque isle, Maine. In Mr. Harper’s class we have learned about the engineering design process, what engineers do (they solve problems) as well as educational and career paths. Many of us have already been accepted into the engineering programs at the University of Maine College of Engineering and through Mr. Harper’s class have college credits for MEE 120 (Engineering graphics) and CIE 101 (Engineering Graphics for Civil Engineers). For us it’s an exciting time to be involved in engineering. In our classroom lab we have four 3D printers, a CNC milling machine and a CNC laser cutter and a drone for aerial mapping etc. (We really want a 3D scanner but they are too expensive at the moment) We use some amazing programs such as Solidworks, Civil 3D to design our various projects. None of this technology existed when Mr. Harper started his career – it’s hard to imagine what technology you are using in your time. Some of the projects we are working on include: reverse engineering a magneto impulse coupling using the patent drawings and fabricating a working prototype, a 3D printed pneumatic motor, a flashing lantern for the Amish buggies, an ice fishing tip-up rig, a roadway for the Maine Forest & Logging Museum, a spoke-less bicycle, a drone, a really cool bed and many other really interesting projects. What’s it like in our time? Well, currently we are in a pandemic with Covid-19. In March of 2020 our schools went to remote learning. We are back in the classroom but have to wear masks at all times and we have some fellow students who are in quarantine for ten days. Regardless, we have a passion for engineering and design. Engineers create the world that we live in. We have learned that no matter what you do for a profession have a passion for it and as Mr. Harper says “make best use of time, always.” Don’t be afraid to think out of the box or run against the grain. Just because it’s the common or popular line of thought doesn’t mean it’s the only way. Always do good. "You won't get fired if you do something, you will if you don't do anything. Do something if it is wrong, for you can correct that, but there is no way to correct nothing." A virtual beam signing is truly a measure of the times we live in and our progress forward. This building is a great testament to The University of Maine's achievements, and I am glad that I could be a part of it!
