“I am very fortunate that foundations and programs, such as the Class of 1996 Scholarship, exist to help students like myself in their academic endeavors.”
Kassidy has a strong connection to the Class of 1996 as her mother, Stephanie Pineo Seeley, graduated from the University of Maine in 1996 with a Masters of Education. Kassidy, too, looks to pursue a graduate education after she graduates in May 2018.
Kassidy puts a great deal of time and focus into her education. She is the member of two honor societies – Phi Kappa Phi and Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society. She is also a member of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association and the Student Academy of Audiology. She is also a member of the campus’s Autism Awareness Group.
Raising money for charity is also an important part of Kassidy’s life. This year, Kassidy and her family participated in Eastern Maine Medical Center’s Champion for the Cure Challenge. EMMC’s Champion for the Cure event raises money each year for local cancer research. Kassidy and her family participated in honor of her boyfriend’s father.
“My boyfriend’s mother started this tradition, and we, along with many other community members and friends, walked in honor of him. We call ourselves ‘Sammy’s Squad’. Our team raised approximately $10,000 for local cancer research…”
Kassidy is also an avid volleyball player, playing in a local Brewer Rec league. When a fellow teammate was diagnosed with cancer, the team banded together and put on a tournament to raise money for his treatment. “It was a good example of how people can come together and make a difference for those they love,” said Kassidy.
As a part of the Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society (KDP), Kassidy has developed a love of working with children, including volunteering for Family Literacy Night at the local Asa Adams Elementary School. It was working with children along with mentorship from local teachers as part of her education here at UMaine that helped foster Kassidy’s passion for speech pathology. She hopes to attend the University of Maine in the fall in the Communications Sciences and Disorders graduate program.
“I will continue to strive for excellence in my academic career and will utilize the education that has been provided for me. I greatly appreciate your contribution to my college experience.”
