Joey Garcia for webIn his senior year of high school at Nokomis Regional High School, Joseph Garcia grew to enjoy learning about physics. Now, at the University of Maine, Joseph has continued to learn about and love physics enough to make it his major of study, and join two research groups. This year Joseph was elected president of the Society of Physics Students, which he has been a part of since his first year at the University, and he is waiting to hear back from graduate schools.

Joseph was awarded the Michael & Ellen Flaherty Fund Scholarship for the spring 2016 semester, and will be using that financial stability to continue his education post-grad.

“After graduating from the University of Maine, I plan on attending physics graduate school to do research in atomic, molecular, and optical physics (AMO) or CMP. By attending graduate school and focusing on these fields, I will be much more prepared to do research as part of the effort to build realizable, practical quantum computers, devices that hold great promise for simulation and cryptography applications.”

“This scholarship has lessened my financial burden, allowing me to focus on what is important: my education. Thank you again for your generosity, I really do appreciate it.”
