Charles-Alexandre Roy moved to the United States from Quebec in 2011. His wife, Victoria Roy (Reeves), a 2012 and 2017 University of Maine alumna herself, is originally from the Bangor area. Their love is what brought Charles to Maine.

Currently, Charles is a Bioengineering senior with four minors, including chemistry, microbiology, molecular & cellular biology, and nanoscience. Since the age of 12, Charles has known he wanted to pursue the biological sciences.

“I’m still not fully settled on what I want to study when I finish my undergraduate degree, but I would like to work in research and I want to do work in an area that has practical applications for alleviating human suffering.I look forward to giving back as I have been blessed so much by others.”

In that vein, Charles is currently doing undergraduate research on gold nanoparticles and their potential for early and improved cancer detection. Charles is conducting this research with the Mason Research Group in the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering.

Charles also spends time volunteering for the American Scientific Affiliation (ASA), a well-known organization that discusses the connections between science and faith. Charles is currently assisting the ASA with improving their archive, consisting of over 70 years’ worth of journals.

When Charles isn’t studying or working on research, he enjoys watercolor painting, hiking, and sailing. He also enjoys a good read – spending time with classic literature, popular fantasy, and science fiction. Some of his favorite authors include Neil Postman, J.R.R. Tolkien, H.G. Wells, C.S. Lewis, and Leo Tolstoy.

Charles, a first generation university student, is incredibly thankful for receiving the Stanley R. ’34 & Faye D. Doane Scholarship. The Stanley R. ’34 & Faye D. Doane Scholarship has certainly made a positive impact on Charles’ education at UMaine.

“The scholarship came to me at the right moment, surprising me to no end at how blessed I truly am. Gifts such as yours are such an encouragement. I know it’s somewhat cliché, but this scholarship helps facilitate my education and motivates me to give back to the community. Bottom line, I’m incredibly grateful. Thank you so very much.”
