New Funds FY19
Dr. John C. Abbott and Dr. Susan Blough Abbott Scholarship Fund
John C. Abbott, Ph.D. ’64, and Dr. Suzanne Blough Abbott, Ed.D. spent 35 years of varied experiences in education. They established this fund to support a deserving first-year undergraduate with financial need in either the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences or the College of Education and Human Development. First preference shall be given to students who attend Carrabec High School.
Doug Allen Philosophy Fund
University of Maine Professor of Philosophy Douglas M. Allen, Ph.D., and his wife Ilze Petersons established this fund. It may be used to support philosophical lectures on progressive perspectives, and also for student support to meet the needs of highly motivated students.
Kenneth W. Allen Scholarship
This fund was established with a gift from the Class of 1963 to assist students with demonstrated financial need who have graduated from high schools in Washington County, Maine. A first preference shall be given to students who have graduated from Shead High School in Eastport, Maine, Ken Allen’s hometown.
Paul A. Ames, Jr. Scholarship
Paul A. “Ted” Ames, Jr. established this fund to provide assistance to UMaine students who have demonstrated financial need, have graduated from Edward Little High School in Auburn, Maine, and have declared business administration as their major.
Richard Parks Anderson and Darin M. Anderson Music Composition Fund
Richard Parks Anderson and his wife, Karin Anderson, established this fund in support of the composition of musical works by UMaine students and faculty, and performances by UMaine faculty and students of those works and others by living composers. This is an affiliated fund of the McGillicuddy Humanities Center.
Nancy Arms ’84, Chadwick and Barbara Arms 4-H Scholarship Fund
Nancy L. Arms ’84 established the fund in support of UMaine students who have participated in the 4-H Leadership and Service Program.
Dr. Robert C. Bayer Fund
Established in honor of Dr. Mayer’s retirement as Executive Director of the Lobster Institute at the University of Maine, this fund supports student projects and /or assistantships to benefit the lobster fishery and/or industry-related sectors.
Gail H. Brown Scholarship Fund
Gail H. Brown ’63, who serves on the Senior Alumni Scholarship Selection Committee, creates this scholarship that will be awarded to worthy and needy nontraditional students.
Stephanie E. Burnett, faculty member of the School of Food and Agriculture at UMaine, and David A. Farthing ’07 established this fund to recognize top students in greenhouse management.
Dr. Llewellyn E. Clark ’54 Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established for the benefit of the University of Maine with gifts from his children: Charles “Rocky” Clark, Susan Clark Henderson ’80, and John Clark; grandsons Joe and Steve Dennison in memory of their mother, Deborah Clark Dennison, as well as other family and friends. This scholarship will benefit students majoring in engineering, with a first preference for scholar-athletes.
Class of 2013 Scholarship Fund
This fund was established with gifts from the members of the Class of 2013, and will provide scholarship aid for deserving undergraduate students demonstrating financial need and academic merit. First preference shall be given to students who are direct descendants of members of the Class of 2013.
Douglas B. Cook Scholarship Fund
Established by colleagues and friends of Douglas B. Cook ’86, this fund is to support deserving UMaine students who are majoring in forestry or engineering.
Dickinson School of Policy and International Affairs Alumni Internship Fund
This fund was established with gifts from alumni and friends of the University of Maine School of Policy and International Affairs (SPIA), grateful for Dan and Betty Churchill’s steadfast leadership of SPIA and Dickinson College. Serving students of “today and tomorrow,” the fund shall support travel and costs associated with internships for students who are enrolled in the University of Maine School of Policy and International Affairs.
Mary Small Eckton ’54, ’57G and Wallace H. Eckton Fund for Improving Math Education
Mary Small Eckton ’54, ’57G and Wallace H. Eckton established this fund to benefit the Maine Center for Research in STEM Education in its work to support teachers of elementary-level math.
Joyce Vorakiarthy Emery and Larry L. Emery Scholarship
Larry L. Emery ’70 established this fund in memory of the love of his life, Joyce, to benefit undergraduate students with financial need and academic merit in the College of Natural Sciences, Forestry and Agriculture.
President Joan Ferrini-Mundy Faculty Research Learning Fund
Dr. Ferrini-Mundy, president of the University of Maine and its regional campus, the University of Maine at Machias, and her husband, Richard, established this fund. Continuing her lifelong support of teaching, research and community engagement, this fund will provide assistance to University of Maine or University of Maine at Machias faculty for projects to integrate their research/scholarship into their student learning opportunities.
Ada C. Fisher Scholarship Fund
Ada C. Fisher ’42, who grew up in northern Maine but lived for many years in California, established this fund as a bequest to assist students who are studying arts and humanities.
Bob and Beth Fuller Scholarship Fund
Established with a bequest from Elizabeth G. Fuller in memory of her husband, Robert L. Fuller ’38, this fund is to be used for scholarships for University of Maine students.
Frank P. and Mary H. Gilley Forestry Fund
Frank P. Gilley ’44 established this fund through a trust to ultimately provide support for the School of Forest Resources.
Captain Walter L. Hall ’61 Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund
Anonymous donors established this fund to preserve and maintain in perpetuity the Captain Walter L. Hall ’61/Vietnam Veterans Memorial, located on the Orono campus of the University of Maine.
George C. Hall Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established by four of George C. Hall’s grandchildren: Lauren C. Hall ’03, Jamie A. Hall ’93, Samuel B. Hall ’93 and Jessica H. Hosford ’94, ’97G. The scholarship shall be used to provide financial assistance to attract and retain qualified students attending UMaine who are enrolled in either the Maine Business School or the College of Engineering, and are in good academic standing.
John ’83 and Jonathan ’83 Harter Scholarship Fund
John ’83 and Jonathan ’83 Harter created this scholarship to “pay forward” the emergency assistance they received as undergraduate students.
Frederick E. Hutchinson College of Natural Sciences, Forestry, and Agriculture Student Emergency Fund
Roy F. Jeffrey ’68, ’72G and his wife, Marilyn A. Altobello, Ph.D., established this fund in honor of UMaine’s 16th president, Dr. Frederick Hutchinson ’53, ’58G, to provide assistance during times of financial instability or emergency.
Christine Born Johnson ’82 and William C. Johnson PaCEsetter Scholarship Fund
Christine E. Johnson ’82 and William C. Johnson established this fund to provide financial assistance for students choosing to major in civil engineering, with a preference for those who are graduates of Westbrook High School.
Jane Wiseman Johnson Athletic Scholarship Fund
University of Maine Seal Award for academic excellence recipient Jane Wiseman Johnson ’56, ’61G, and her husband, Charles F. Johnson, established this fund. It will provide financial support to deserving student-athletes.
Gilbert C. and Carol R. LeClair Scholarship Fund
Gilbert C. LeClair established this fund to assist UMaine students who are graduates of Gould Academy in Bethel, Maine or Telstar High School in Bethel, Maine who are majoring in engineering.
William A. Linton Scholarship
Established by the Linton family to honor their father, William A. Linton ’50, this fund will provide financial assistance to University of Maine students who are studying geological sciences.
Liscomb Family Global Affairs Fund
Laureen Baldwin Liscomb ’61 established this fund. She and her late husband, Clark Noyes Liscomb ’60, traveled the world, and had a great passion for international affairs and policy. This fund will assist students in the School of Policy and International Affairs to support international internships.
John F. Mahon Scholarship Fund
This fund was established in honor of Dr. John F. Mahon’s retirement and will benefit an upperclass undergraduate student in the Maine Business School who is actively involved in the life of the University of Maine.
Mount Desert Island Region Leaders Club of the University of Maine Scholarship
This fund was established to help students of “today and tomorrow.” It shall benefit a student who graduated from MDI High School, has completed his or her first year at UMaine, and is in good academic standing.
Scott E. Myers ’66, ’68G Scholarship
Eileen Myers Enyart established this fund to honor her late spouse, Scott E. Myers ’66, ’68G, a beloved husband, father, friend and educator. This fund will support students enrolled in the Master of Education and Certificate of Advanced Studies programs in educational leadership.
Frederick J. Nohmer and Joyce Boardman Nohmer ’60 Scholarship
Frederick J. Nohmer and Joyce Boardman Nohmer ’60 established this fund to provide annual scholarships to one student majoring in education and to one student majoring in engineering.
Scott and Jennifer Ouellette Scholarship
Scott and Jennifer Ouellette ’89 established this fund to assist sophomores, juniors and/or seniors who are graduates of a Maine high school.
Valerie E. Peer-Cort and Robert E. Cort Scholarship
Valerie E. Peer-Cort and Robert “Rob” E. Cort ’80 established this fund to assist students majoring in business administration or communication sciences and disorders, in alternating years, who are Maine residents and who have successfully completed their first year at the University of Maine.
Peter M. Pelletier Scholarship Fund
Peter N. and Doris L. Pelletier established this fund in loving memory of their son, Peter “Mike” Pelletier ’84 in support of students who are pursuing a degree in business administration in accounting.
Susan G. Randall ’89 and Anthony L. Randall Field Hockey Fund
Sue and Tony Randall established this fund to provide financial assistance to support University of Maine Field Hockey.
Patricia Johnson and Raymond Rier Scholarship
Raymond J. Rier ’77 established this fund for students who are residents of Washington County.
Professor John M. Romanyshyn Student Support Fund
Anne Parker Chaffee ’68 established this fund in honor of her advisor, Professor John M. Romanyshyn. The fund provides support to students majoring in social work who have demonstrated financial need, academic merit and promise in the field of social work or public policy.
Thomas A. Russell and Sonia Martin Russell Scholarship Fund
Thomas A. Russell ’73 and Sonia Martin Russell ’74 established this fund for deserving undergraduate students who are majoring in biomedical sciences. The scholarship is given based on financial need and academic achievement.
Raymond C. Scheppach, Ph.D. ’62 established this fund to provide assistance to meritorious undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need and an interest in studying economics, financial economics or international affairs, with a concentration in economics.
Schmelzer-Livingston Fund for the Center for Poetry and Poetics
Henry L.P. “Hank” Schmelzer ’75 and Cynthia E. Livingston, both long-standing supporters of the arts and humanities, established this fund to provide financial assistance to the Center for Poetry and Poetics. This is an affiliated fund of the McGillicuddy Humanities Center.
Richard A. and Mary Whitcomb Stover Alumni House Fund

Frederick H. Thompson ’28, ’61H Scholarship
Margaret Thompson Villarreal ’61 established this fund in memory of her father, Frederick H. Thompson. The fund supports graduates of Maine high schools demonstrating financial need, with a preference for those majoring in elementary or secondary education.
University of Maine Winningest Men’s Basketball Team Fund
This fund was established by family and friends of John M. Ingalls, Sr. ’61, to celebrate the 1959–60 UMaine Men’s Basketball Team. This fund will assist the UMaine Men’s Basketball program to enhance pride among players and the community. In honor of John Ingalls’ contribution to the team, an award will be made to the player who has demonstrated the strongest work ethic and most competitive spirit.
Stanley E. Walker ’62, ’66G Memorial Civil Engineering Excellence Fund
Meredith Osgood Walker ’62 and family established this fund in memory of Stanley Walker ’62. The fund supports undergraduate and graduate civil and environmental engineering students and activities.
Herbert Edwin Wave Scholarship Fund
This fund was established by the estate of Dr. Herbert Edwin Wave. To honor Herb’s love of the outdoors, what nature provides and the importance of its preservation, the fund will support one or more students in the Master of Forestry degree program.
Owen W. and Anna H. Wells Scholarship
This fund was established with a gift from Owen W. Wells ’65, and his wife, Anna Wells, to benefit deserving University of Maine students.
Westbrook Rod and Gun Club Scholarship
This fund was established by the Westbrook Rod and Gun Club, and will provide annual support to deserving wildlife ecology students at the University of Maine.
Carol L. Wood Nursing Scholarship
This fund was established by family and friends in honor of Dr. Carol L. Wood, a highly regarded faculty member in the School of Nursing. The fund will be used to provide financial assistance to students majoring in nursing who demonstrate both academic merit and financial need.
