Charles E. Gilbert Loan Program

IMPACT GRAPHICThe Charles E. Gilbert Loan Program provides low-interest loans for UMaine graduates seeking medical, dental or veterinary school.

Charles E. Gilbert graduated from the University of Maine in 1894 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was employed as an engineer with Great Northern Paper. In addition to establishing the Gilbert Trust, he bequeathed his entire library of over 2,000 books to the University of Maine. He also left a costume collection from around the world, to the Maine Masque, the UMaine theater group.

To show his appreciation for the care received during his long illness, he designated that the loan fund he established be used for the medical profession, including dental and veterinary medicine. He died in 1953.

Charles E. Gilbert
“I make this a loan fund because I believe the desire to pay for what one receives is an indication of quality and character and that he or she who may in this way be assisted to success will wish to return to the fund such monies as he or she may have received in order that it may be used for assisting others.”
